Sleep hygiene includes strategies including do not over sleep, keep a sleep schedule, do not make yourself go to sleep, do not caffeinated drinks in the afternoon or evening, do not drink alcohol just before going to bed, do not smoke, do not go to bed hungry, do not eat prior to going to bed, and do not exercise prior to going to bed.
Controlling things that stimulate the mind or body should be removed from the sleep environment. You should only use the bed for sleeping and having sex. Do not read, watch TV, or work in bed. Go to bed when you are ready to fall to sleep, turn off all lights, and turn off all noise in the bedroom or around bedroom.
Learning to relax every muscle in your body while lying or sitting prior to going to bed can help with insomnia. If you do not fall asleep after being in bed twenty minutes, it is recommended that you get out of bed and try some relaxation techniques.

Medical treatments for Insomnia Medical treatments for insomnia can include non-benzodiazepines for short-term insomnia. This type of medication works on the brain to induce sleep and do not have that hangover effect noted with other medications. A few of these medications include Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata. Ramelteon is a medication recently approved that acts similar to the melatonin receptor that helps induce sleep. Melatonin is an herb that has been very effective for individuals with transient or short-term insomnia. The only bad side to Melatonin is that it is herbal supplement therefore; it is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Some patients have had success with antidepressants for their insomnia for those with existing psychiatric problems. Herbal medications even though they are not regulated by the FDA also have been reported to help many individuals with insomnia. These herbs include chamomile, kava-kava, and valerian.
